Request a Custom QuoteBuying Guide: Choosing the Right Fiber Optic Pigtails
Terminating your backbone fiber cables requires flawless optical connectivity. Whether you are splicing inside a high-density ODF (Optical Distribution Frame) or finalizing an FTTH customer drop box, selecting the correct pre-polished fiber optic pigtails is critical for achieving ultra-low insertion loss and minimizing maintenance.
1. Single-Mode (OS2) vs. Multimode (OM3/OM4)
Match your existing network cable. Choose Single-Mode (9/125µm) pigtails for long-haul telecom, CATV, and FTTH networks. For enterprise local area networks (LAN) and short-reach data center server links, select Multimode (50/125µm) pigtails designed for VCSEL laser transmission.
2. UPC (Blue) vs. APC (Green) Polish
Ferrule polishing directly impacts Return Loss (RL). Standard UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) provides excellent performance for regular data networks. However, for FTTx/PON systems and video (CATV) signals that are highly sensitive to back-reflections, the 8-degree angled APC (Angled Physical Contact) is mandatory.
3. The Importance of Bend-Insensitive Fiber
When splicing inside confined splice closures or small FTTH wall outlets, standard G.652.D fiber can experience macro-bending loss. We highly recommend specifying G.657.A1 or G.657.A2 bend-insensitive fiber cores for your pigtails, ensuring signal integrity even when wrapped tightly in splicing cassettes.
4. 0.9mm vs. Thicker Jackets
Select the jacket diameter based on your hardware. For internal fusion splicing within an ODF or splice tray, the ultra-thin 0.9mm easy-strip buffer is the standard choice. If the pigtail will be routed outside a protective cassette, thicker 2.0mm or 3.0mm jackets offer essential mechanical protection.
5. Utilizing 12-Color Pigtail Packs
Managing high-core-count cables can be chaotic. WolonFiber provides 4, 6, 8, and 12-core bundled pigtails colored strictly according to TIA/EIA-598 standards (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, etc.). This visually intuitive system drastically speeds up field splicing and eliminates port mapping errors.
6. Factory-Polished vs. Field Termination
While field polishing is possible, it is time-consuming and inconsistent. Our factory-terminated pigtails are manufactured in cleanrooms with automated polishing machines, guaranteeing Insertion Loss ≤ 0.2dB. Pre-polished pigtails ensure you only need to perform a simple fusion splice in the field.
Fiber Optic Pigtails FAQ
Expert answers on fusion splicing, color codes, and custom pigtail configurations directly from our optical manufacturing team.
What is the exact difference between a fiber pigtail and a patch cord?
Patch Cords: Have connectors on both ends and are used for plugging directly into active equipment or patching between two terminated ports.
Why should I use 12-Fiber Color-Coded Pigtails?
Should I choose UPC or APC polish for my pigtail connectors?
APC (Angled Physical Contact, Green): Features an 8-degree angled end-face that drastically minimizes back-reflection (Return Loss). APC is strictly required for FTTx/PON architectures, analog video (CATV), and high-bandwidth, long-haul transmission systems.
